A continual argument
Dozens of sea lions sleep on floating platforms like these in Newport harbor. It was night when I took this photo, which is considerably lighter than the scene actually appeared. The sea lion emerging from the water is attempting to take a spot on the platform, and is having to contest for the space with at least two prior occupants.
During the entire evening that I was at the Newport docks the sea lions were, in effect, shouting at one another, making a very loud sound like a low-pitched "Arrf". The noise would just about die out as the animals settled down to sleep when a new sea lion would appear and try to take a spot on an overcrowded platform. That would set off the nearby sea lions again, and the "Arrfs" would continue for several more minutes. I spoke to some of the local people who said that the noise continues most if not all of the night, and it can be heard well away from the harbor.
It's very interesting to see and hear, once. I'm not sure it adds to the ambiance of Newport, which is a very nice seacoast town.
